IKEA has developed a line of fabric home accessories produced from rice crop waste in India, which would otherwise be burned, thus having a negative impact on the already dramatic local air quality.
The collection, called Förändring, a Swedish word meaning change, includes lampshades, vases and carpets produced by reusing waste materials.
The lampshades and vases are created from a pulp composed of textile waste from rice cultivation, while as regards the carpets, the stems of the plant are woven to create a fabric. The carpets have a cotton blend warp (40% cotton-60% rice), which not only increases their resistance but allows you to create interesting chromatic plays of shades following hand dyeing. In fact, the coloring process aims precisely at the aesthetic uniqueness of each individual piece thanks to the absence of mechanical steps within production. In fact, the collection was designed as varied not only in shapes and colors, but above all in the techniques and structures with which the different pieces are created.
We often hear about “vegan leather”, as an alternative to traditional leathers of animal origin. But what does this expression mean?
It is estimated that the footwear industry, with its mass production accompanied by a progressive reduction in the lifespan of products, is responsible for 1.4% of global GHG emissions, corresponding to 700 million tons of CO2eq.
