Scoby can be eaten or composted

Developed by MakeGrowLab – a team of designers and scientists – SCOBY offers a sustainable solution to the problem of disposable plastic.

Each wrapper is made entirely from agricultural leftovers, which means it is 100% compostable. In addition to this, the material is flexible, durable, resistant to water and generates an oxygen barrier that keeps food fresh and keeps it for up to two yearsi.

The packaging is made by growing kombucha tea in a shallow container with a sugary liquid that contains a culture of bacteria and yeasts. Agricultural residues are added over two weeks and left to ferment at room temperature without the need for direct sunlight.

This material has different applications, it can be transformed into any type of packaging, including soap wrappers, spice sachets and bags for cereals and rice. It could also be used as a substitute for the transparent film that is used to close food containers to keep it fresh, in fact the light and translucent material is easily malleable and can be shaped to fit a variety of foods to prevent spoilage.

The maximum size per membrane is about 50 cm x 50 cm, this process has yet to be carried out on a larger volume scale.
After use, Scoby can be eaten or composted, serving as a natural fertilizer or as a probiotic drink.
